Navigating Aesthetic Treatments: Are Skin Boosters and Dermal Fillers the Same?

Table Of Contents

Aesthetic injectables have come a long way in the past decade as they’re a quick and less invasive way to achieve a more pleasant look. One of the more popular reasons for this is people want to look younger and more refreshed. There are two main types of aesthetic injectables to turn to for restoring youthfulness: skin boosters and dermal fillers. However, skin boosters and dermal fillers differ in what they do to your face. One is used to enhance and augment certain facial features while the other mainly helps improve hydration and texture. The main question is: how do you decide?

Making the right decision is important when it comes to aesthetic injectables. Millions of people turn to cosmetic procedures, but one advantage of aesthetic procedures is that it is more cost-effective and has a lower downtime compared to plastic surgery. Still, the effects of treatment are expected to last for at least a few months. Going for a treatment that doesn’t suit your purpose may result in disappointment. Maybe you aren’t getting the results that you want, or maybe you are seeing change in the wrong parts of your face. Of course, it will be helpful to turn to a professional aesthetician for help. Ultimately, you have to know what it is you want to achieve so you can communicate this clearly.

In this article, we tell you everything you need to know about skin boosters and fillers, so you can make the right decision.

Your Skin Changes Over Time

As we get older, it’s normal to experience skin changes. This is due to a lower production of collagen and elastin as we age, or through the formation of dietary or exercise habits. Perhaps it’s a loss of baby fat, skin sagging or the appearance of fine lines. While this is not necessarily a bad sign, some individuals may want to achieve a more desirable look through aesthetic alterations. The primary objective of injectables like skin boosters and fillers is to restore a youthful appearance through texture and volume. They are also meant to be more subtle, unlike drastic face surgery, and meant to enhance skin qualities and the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin.

What Are Skin Boosters?

Skin boosters are injected into the skin to improve skin texture and boost hydration. This is done through micro-injections of dermal fillers that do not penetrate the skin layer. Skin boosters can be used on facial areas, neck and even some parts of the body to enhance skin quality. Using hyaluronic acid as its main component, this is a less complex injectable. The type of dermal filler is called a non-cross-link filler, which means it does not contain the complex binding ingredient that volumises and augments the face shape. The ingredients in skin booster also contain antioxidants and vitamins, and help to promote collagen and elastin. Overall, the skin continues to look firmer, plump and continues to glow even months after treatment.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are used to replace lost volume or add on volume to the face to even out the face, restore a more youthful look, smooth lines and plump certain areas of the face. This is done by injecting a gel-like substance with the active ingredient hyaluronic acid beneath the skin layer. Dermal fillers are commonly used for areas around the nose, mouth and under eye areas. However, nowadays, fillers are not just used to improve aging, sagging or hollow features. You can use fillers to add volume to the lips, cheeks or temples, chin, forehead and to improve facial symmetry.

Over 2 million people get fillers annually, a number that keeps rising every year. Some of this can be attributed to the rise of “Instagram” face, or celebrities getting procedures done. It’s also because fillers are generally safe, quick and easy to get. Here are some benefits of dermal fillers that you should know:

  • Low downtime. Depending on the area and amount of filler injected, the downtime will vary between 24 to 48 hours for the swelling to subside completely. Right after the procedure, patients can proceed with daily activities as per normal, with the exception of intense physical activity.
  • Quick procedure. Since it is administered through injection, the entire procedure is usually under 10 minutes. That’s why procedures like nose fillers have been coined the “lunchtime nose job”.
  • Low chance of risk. Dermal filler complications are very rare. Most of the time, patients only have to worry about facial asymmetry, which depends on the skill, expertise and experience of the person administering the injection. Other common risks are swelling or mild bruising which disappear after a few hours or days.
  • Non-permanent, but long lasting results. Depending on the type of filler, some treatments can last from 6 months to several years. Even then, patients opt for dermal fillers as they’re non-permanent and can switch up in a few months if they do not like the results. Some people also use dermal fillers as a “test run” on a new look before deciding on something more permanent.
  • Subtle, yet noticeable improvements. Dermal fillers are a way to enhance facial features and improve the skin without any drastic change. Results are natural.
  • Affordable. While not exactly cheap, dermal fillers are a great alternative to plastic surgery, which can cost thousands of dollars.

Active Ingredients in Dermal Fillers

It’s important to know what goes into your body. Also, there are a range of dermal fillers to choose from. The main difference between them is usually the main active ingredient, which results in slightly difference face changes. The common active ingredients in dermal fillers are:

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is the most common ingredient in dermal fillers and skin boosters, and it is essentially water. Our bodies naturally have hyaluronic acid in its tissues (about 15 grams) and is easily dissolvable, which is why fillers break down after a while.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite

Hydroxylapatite in dermal fillers is a soluble compound mainly used to target severe wrinkles by activating fibroblasts in connective tissue. It lasts for a year or a year and a half on average, and is a less popular main active ingredient as it is for more severe cases.

Polylactic Acid

Polylactic acid is a simulatory ingredient that helps to boost collagen production in the skin. Patients usually inject this multiple times, over the course of a few years to achieve long-lasting results. It is usually administered in multiple injections, until they achieve the look that they want.

Polymethylmethacrylate

Polymethylmethacrylate is the active ingredient in semi-permanent dermal fillers. Similar to liposuction, this involves using fat from another part of the body as a way to add volume and fullness. Polymethylmethacrylate results are seldom reversible, as they’re using body elements, and are more invasive than traditional filler.

What About Botulinum toxin?

The OG injectable treatment of the 21st century was approved by the FDA back in 2002. Unlike the other aesthetic treatments, its main ingredient is botulinum toxin, which prevents muscle contraction on your face to smooth out your lines.

Similar to dermal fillers, its effects are only temporary (3 to 4months) and require follow up sessions for maintenance. Additionally, it is a prescription-only treatment which translates to a higher price tag as only doctors can administer for you.

Deciding On a Treatment

Once you’ve decided to go for dermal fillers, there are a range of treatments to choose from.

Profhilo

Relatively new in the world of aesthetic injectables, Profhilo is made up of pure hyaluronic acid, aiming to build collagen, elastin and increase stem cell viability for glass skin. Profhilo focuses on deep hydration through penetration of the dermis, leaving the hyaluronic acid to spread out under the layers of the skin. Much like a skin booster, this does not augment or change the facial features such as dark eye circles or eye bags.

Rejuran

Rejuran is a popular treatment in Asia known as the Miracle Healer. Rejuran is made by extracting salmon DNA, proven to address skin concerns and rejuvenate dull skin. In the long-term, those looking to slow down aging can consider Rejuran.

Restylane

Restylane with the main active ingredient being hyaluronic acid targets wrinkles around the face. Usually used for the lips and lines around the mouth and nose, Restylane adds volume to sunken areas to even out skin’s appearance and restore your facial contours.
